I did not have many chances to think about recycling, the green movement, or environmental issues before I became a mom, and I knew some people cared about those subjects and thought that was not me.

However, many things changed after I became a mom of 4 kids. As I got used to the mom’s role, I began thinking about a better environment to hand down to the next generation.

From there, I started to bring my attention to the useful materials that were about to be trashed. I found a bunch of electrical wires in my garage and realized I could turn them into a project. Some neighbors happily donated the remaining cables from their garage clean-up, and friends around me brought up the unused wires. I take this project as my chronic habit.

It is a pain to peel all the messy electrical cords and pull the copper wires from them, but I do love seeing the transformation from the trashed cables to metal flowers. I feel that process encouraged me to reboot my workbench and myself from a long break, like the trashed copper wire blooming into beautiful flowers.

And after knowing that glass containers are not accepted in the recycling bins anymore in my neighborhood, I tried to find a way to use glass jars, bottles, etc., in my daily life. Using some of the broken glass with my glaze for my clay pieces brought me another perspective. My current work contains recycling materials, but I cannot say my work represents a good way of recycling itself. Because I know the portion of recycled materials in my work is very small.

However, I expect my work would be a good chance to think about materials we use daily and to see how the unwanted material is returning to us.

There’s nothing that’s not precious, and everything is practical.
